I just watched the movie a second time the other night. I mentioned before that when Edge overuses effects to his own impressiveness/delight, I remind myself how much I liked his early playing. Then there is a scene where he pulls out a box of old cassette tapes, and says that he has no idea what they are. It turns out they are old '86/'87 guitar licks, pre-Joshua Tree. He smiles a lot. So do I, because the viewer can now "hear" his real guitar playing.
Jack White mentions the act he got his whole act from; The Flat Duo Jets is an early 80s band two-man band. I remember them from college, although at the time I was more into REM and U2!

Addendum: If you still haven't seen it, get it and enjoy! Also, it's Davis Guggenheim, not David. My mistake.
