1956 J-160e

Does anyone know what a 1956 J-160E Gibson would have cost new? This was my grandpa's guitar and i'm just curious as to what he paid for it back then...

Back in the long ago day, Gibson's model number reflected the retail price. J-35's sold for $35 priior to WWII. The J-45 took its place at $45. I don't know when that scheme fell out of use. The J160E was introduced a couple of years prior to your Grandpa's purchase. That 160 might be close to the retail price. I don't think it could have been much more. OF course, that would be a good chunk of change in those days...and also today when adjusted for inflation.
