One big issue I have with Les Paul type guitars is the weight. My shoulder and back really feel it as I get older. Anyone else have this problem? If so have you switched guitars? found the right strap?

Most of the newer LP's I come across are far lighter than the average weights of the 70's LP's. Gibson now drills weight relief holes in the mahogany of the new Standards. Most of the guitars from the Historic line are well under 9 lbs, my current R7 is 8.4lbs.

I've been using the wide Eldorado strap for about a year and it really helps distribute the weight.

I'm over 50, and have no problem with a 9 lb. guitar over 4 sets.

My Les Paul weighs only 8-1/2 lbs, about the same as my ES335, and not much more than most Teles.

Look into a Les Paul Elegant... They are a little more expensive but they have chambered bodies and very beautiful tops on them. The one I have is actually lighter than my new Strat!

I've been awake all night and at first I thought that said a "Les Paul Elephant". Talk about heavy :^)

Howdy,

FWIW, my made-in-Kalamazoo ES-335 (1980) weighs in at 9lbs!
I sold an early 80's LP Std 10 years ago cuz it weighed 10.5 lbs, so help me!

That is so cute. I bet we will be seeing a lot more of those straps when our aging stars get into their late sixties.

(Didn't McCartney just turn 64? I have the television service cut off in the summer, so maybe I missed that being a really big deal.)

zeamo: I'm over 40 & personally I'm kinda fed up with heavy guitars. I recently purchased an Epi Elitist LP Studio & it's heavy. The weight almost made me send it back but I made the committment to get used to it. Now I'm having second thoughts: I'm not adjusting as easily as I thought I would!
I use a Levy 3" wide leather strap & it makes a big difference. It still has the heavy feel happening, but compared to the standard Ernie Ball "plain jane" nylon strap I normally use w/Strats & Teles, the Levy 3" really feels much better. The weight is distributed better across the shoulder with the 3" wide strap & it holds on to the shoulder better than the nylon strap. The leather strap doesn't move very easily unless I move it. I gotta get a new scale so that I can weigh this beast. Some days I want to keep it, other days I'm fed up with the weight & want to get an Epi Elitist Dot or Riviera.
