I just received my July copy of Guitar Player magazine and found an interview with Peter Green where he says: "But my Les Paul was a fabulous guitar. I wish I could get it back today. When you've got something really perfect, you don't realize it at the time." My recollection is that he sold it really cheap to Gary Moore with the understanding that he could buy it back from him anytime. Am I mistaken?

I love Gary Moore's playing as much as anyone but wouldn't it be an act of love on his part to reunite ol' Pete with his Les Paul?....

I've read the story of that transaction as told by both parties - I don't recall any "buyback clause" ever being mentioned. PG didn't really sell it for the $$, his mode was to "divest himself of material possesions" at that time.
Plus, consider the fact that GM has owned & played that guitar for over 10X the time PG had it. It has always been in use. GM has gone thru a # of guitars over the years but that one & one other burst have been constants for him. I'll bet GM is a lot more attached to it than Green ever was!

still, though, wouldn't it be nice to see Greenie reunited with his old friend? I know that Gary replaced the neck (or at least the headstock) which was broken in a car accident.

Gibson's Gary Moore signature model is loosely based on Greenie's old Les Paul, including the flipped and out of phase neck pickup and the faded ambered finish. I know Gibson wanted to reproduce it and sell it as a Peter Green signature model but ol' Pete refused.

Even if he got it back I doubt Greeny would use it live... he plays a Hank Marvin-esque cherry red Strat now and once declared in a recent interview that the Les Paul is such a beautiful guitar it doesnt deserve to be played but kept in a museum.

I personally disagree of course... :)

I love both of these guys a lot.

Personally, it's in bad taste for PG to politic in music rags to get the guitar back. I hope GM ignores this hype and keeps it ........... unless he truly wants PG to have it back.

Peter Green is more contradictory in interviews than Mick Jagger. The difference is, Jagger does it on purpose. Green can't help it. He has lingering mental issues. I still think he is a fantastic guitar player.

It looks like Rick Vitto owned it last? Or was it a loan to Rick? That's Rick in those photo kissing the guitar etc, isn't it?

I didn't check all the pictures, but it's probably him on the last Dallas guitar show where the guitar was exhibited by the current owner who also owns that Maverick-Music site and shop. He bought it only a few months ago directly from Gary Moore for about half a million dollars which made big waves everywhere in the vintage guitar world.

Rick Vito seems to be a big fan of Peter Green, so that's why it's mentioned on the shop site to check his biography:
