Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows what pickups Gibson was using on the '73-75 Les Paul Standards?

Thanks

I am sure that Gibson did some different pickups for the LP vs. say an ES-175, but the custom pickup market had not exploded at that time. There was not the players' knowledge or the 'need to know' that there is nowadays. The first I remember of Gibson putting a 'special' pickup with a designation was the 'dirty fingers' that they put out in the mid-'70's, I think. Seymour Duncan first of all and others that followed really expanded the market and also the desire of the players for more knowledge about pickups. Back then, we just played the things. We didn't need no steekin' knowledge...

Actually Larry DiMarzio pretty much started the production aftermarket pickup thing with his Super Distortion and PAF pickups when Seymour was still in England working as a tech; that would be in 74-75. SD was doing custom work for people until the late 70's. But a Les Paul Deluxe wasn't safe from a router from Larry D came to town  .

If the early seventies Gibson pickups were still just pickups; you didn't get a neck or bridge pickup, you got a pickup, choice of nickel or gold. After DiMarzio came around they started coming out with different pickups, in addition to the Dirty Fingers they also had a "Super Humbucker". They had some other names but I think they were more "new" names for the same old pickup rather than new pups like the Dirty Fingers and Super H were ( at one point P90's were renamed "laid back" pickups, gotta love the '70's ).
