I'm a trivia nut and I don't know the answer to a simple question.

Why were TV Yellow Gibsons called "TV" Yellow??

What does the "TV" stand for?

Gibson gurus enlighten me.

Thanks,
John

The TV yellow was a color that I believe worked well on B&W TV and appeared as "white". I think it didn't overexpose (not sure on that terminology for TV) the video camera.

The "TV" stands for television, in the 50's, the "highly desireable" finish for furniture was this yellow tone that showed off the natural wood and was first introduced on TV sets, later adopted by other furniture makers.

I've always heard that it was a color that looked white on b/w tv's.

It's also important to note that TV Yellow usually also stands for "add an extra two to four hundred dollars to the price."

I also heard that it was made to show up better on black and white TVs.

Check out Buddy Holly on the Ed Sullivan show. You know when he is playing that sunburst Strat.

The only thing you see is the center of the guitar where the sunburst is lighter. The rest of the sunburst seems to fade into the background.

Plus the studio lights would reflect off of the shine on most guitars and into the camera. Not good for black and white TV.
