You bought the Joan Jett model, right? Bet it's a great guitar.
As for myself I use electric nickel wound light gauge strings, from 10 to 46 thousandths. They are the best gauge for me, I can stretch a note to just were I want it-any lighter gauge and I will overstretch the note.

I recently bought some Ernie Ball Slinky strings in bulk, I will also buy Darco (made by Martin) brand sometimes. Both are good.:)

I like D'Addario rounds, EXL 110s, 110+s or 115s. (10s, 10,5s, 11s)

Avoid Hi-Low sets (Like EXL 116) because you can't get them to intonate well enough.

I've decided one reason I like them is they're generally fresher. Other brands move fewer units - things tend to sit. Another is price. 25 set Bulk Packs of the 110s and 115s can be quite inexpensive and you can be more cavalier about changing often, trying different sets.

I use Dean Markley blue steel 10-46 set in mine Melody Makers....It's working fine for my ear and fingers...

When I was using a Melody Maker ('63) as my main guitar I always used B.B. King Signature Gauge Gibson strings. Seemed to intonate well, felt nice, are pure nickel,,,

Congratulations on the new guitar, I'm really enjoying my Les Paul shaped 2004 Melody Maker more all the time!

I just tried a different, better quality Gotoh (japan) tuner on my MM:

I used D'Ad 10-46 with the wound G; EXL110W. these intonate better than the stock 10-46s did.

The tuner bushes I used are the 10mm 3/8ths type.

The strings really make a sharp, full 15 degree plus or minus turn and the tuning stability is much higher. I may shorten up the excess winds on the tuners.

Too bad the large stock washers buggered the headstock face. Maybe I'll try some Grovers later on and use these elsewhere. These sure do expose the stock Ping Works tuners as rubbish. Cheap rubbish.
