well got the guitar (custom ltd edition chrome).
its a beauty thats for sure. Going to take some getting used to being accustomed as i am to fender necks, but it'll be fun getting there. action was too high for my liking out of the box, lowered the bridge, but this made it unplayable around the 12 - 16th fret region, so i'm compromising -do i need a truss rod adjustment ? maybe it needs to settle after transit.
tone wise, had a good play about with my amp (marshall mg15 so its limited and may not bring the best out of the guitar) some very sweet likeable tones.....but as i expected its just a touch vague, not quite clear enough on the low E (even the A is accepyable though!)...lowered the bridge pup under the lower strings, and raised it again, then set it in the middle - not much discernible difference.
with gain, everything from slight break up to full on saturation ; again the amp is limited but i needed quite a lot of tweaking to find a tone that wasnt either too harsh, too farty or too mushy and over the top.
overall impressions ;
I'm going to love this guitar...got its work cut out in all areas compared to my tele but i WILL
i'll probably need a P90 or filtertron at the bridge (the bucker is nice but doesnt QUITE cut it clean on the low E - this is important as i use this one a lot)....and i absolutely insist on clarity/ note separation with gain.
i'm no shredder, i'm a rythmn man mostly - malcolm young, pete townshend are my ballpark...so i'll settle for the action higher than i like (too scared to mess with truss rod, unlike my tele i cant replace the neck if i destroy it) AND adjust to the slacker tension compared to fender.
I'd really appreciate any comments, especially on the action issue..how come i always get the ones with the higher actions ??
am i judging the les paul too harshly or is it the start of a beautiful friendship ?
