Always been a Fender blackface snob (or some derivative boutique Fender 6V6 clone). Love that sparkle, but hate the ice-pick. Deluxes, Princetons, Vibroverbs, Tone Kings, etc. etc.
But, lately, I've been really digging Johnny A's tone. He can play Wes octaves, warm and sweet. He does Chet Atkins and chicken pickin'. And, does a righteous Jimi and everything else inbetween. All with GREAT tone.
Reading up on him, I noticed, surprise, surprise, he's playing a Marshall 6101. He says in interviews that only the '92 blue ones will do, so he has seven of them! He plays straight into the PA with the DI output and the "amp mute" on so he doesn't even use the combo's speakers at all.
Finally got a chance to see him live, and he nails all of his CD's tones live. Now, he has me thinking about finally switching sides???
