What if you could only have one effect?

If you were limited to only having one effect, what would you find to be the most useful?

I don't use effects as much anymore, but the main pedal I always use is my Ernie Ball volume pedal. Its an older pedal that has a preset for rhythm/leads volume changes.
I guess a digital delay pedal is cool for effects but I have a Boss tremolo pedal that would be most useful.

...volume pedal, hmm, that to me can be adjusted with the guitar or amp. Therefore, I'll leave volume out of the possibility of answers. For me, probably delay; The Chameleons, U2, The Cure, etc., most of my favorite "guitar" sounds are from the 80s, hence, delay!

...wisdom

a little reverb can go a long way. I use just enough for effect.

The only pedal I consistently use is a tuner, so rarely use other effects. I have a Cry Baby, but never seem to take it out. I'm old school that just plugs into the amp. It's a lot easier. With my eyesight, I wouldn't be able to see the pedals on a gloomy stage anyway

Assuming I had a nice Fender Tube amp with a built in reverb. I would have to go with a CryBaby Wah pedal. I just have so much fun with that thing.

Using one of my Fender Amps with built-in Reverb, I would have to say Delay or Echo (one or the other).

I notice no one opted for any kind of distortion. My absolute favorite pedal has been and still is a Russian made sovtek big muff pi. You know the green one that's built like a tank. I've used one of them for years and if told that I could only have ONE pedal, that would be it.
