60s Epiphone Century

My favorite guitar when I used to play in college was a hollow, thinline, no-cutaway, cherry red early 60s Epiphone Century with 1 P-90 in the neck position. Looking at the pix now, I realize it did not have the original tuners (replaced with Grovers), tailpiece (a strange wavy Hofner), or pickguard (tortiseshell and hacked at to make room for the P-90). That was a great guitar, serious mojo...

pre-war zenith

i have a '41 zenith acoustic arch top. it looks like someone drug it down 20 milesof gravel road, but it sounds and plays great.
the good news is that i bought it from a suburban music store that was going out of business for $100. with the original hard case!
i've had it for about 10 years. it is warmer sounding than most arch tops i've played, and sounds good for a lot of different kinds of music.

43 triumph archtop...I had it wired with a pup. It was a rescue...looks rough, but smooth as a baby's ass. It has a nice tone with flatwounds on it.

My old Epiphones

In the 80's, walking home from work, I noticed a decidedly older looking Riviera in the window of We Buy Guitars where I regularly drooled. Being a huge L. Carlton fan at the time, and not having the $$$ for a nice older 335, I checked out the Riviera going for $475.00

Well, I played it acoustically first, and was knocked by the action, resonance and general beauty and vibe. Amplified, it sang to me. I couldn't put it down, or leave without it. Turns out it is a 1964. Original case, changed to Grover tuners, stop tail piece pro - installed, honeyburst, and a gorgeous patina with real aged nickel hardware. I have since located a similarly aged nickel Frequensator tailpiece, and self-aged a nickel stop tailpiece to match the rest of the hardware - original p/ups. Players tell me it is one of the finest sounding guitars out there, and I've had many offers !

I have always loved the English invasion groups, Yardbirds being my fave, and always dug the Rivoli basses they used. I now have a '63, Cherry Red. All original except for the 2 killing EMG p/ups, no case. What a thumper! Great for jazz too, as it sings in every register. Round wounds or short scale flat wounds. WoW.

It had been stock from a music store that went out of business and other then missing a neck inlay was brand new with hang tags. I used it for years in various bands and wrote a lot of songs on it. In the early '80's I had a stop tailpiece installed replacing the frequensator tailpiece. I thought that I'd hear a big difference in tone, but it still sounded the same. The tuners have been replaced twice, but always with the same style tuners so it looks original. Recently, I tried a set of Pyramid Gold strings for it. It gave me the sound of the Gibson 340L strings I used back in the '70's. It's a wonderful guitar. I'll have it all of my days. I don't take it out of the house much anymore. It's seen enough gigging. It also appeared in Fret's Magazine when Dawn Torres used it in an article about replacing inlay. (It was the second replacement for the missing inlay. The first was cut from a pearloid guitar pick!)
That's mine. Tell me about yours!
re: pluck the magic twanger, froggy.
I haven't heard that in years. I thought I was the only one who remembered that show. Andy Devine. *L* The king of sidekicks.

That's part of the reason I chose Twang as a nick. Andy Devine, Duane Eddy,
and Dave Edmunds.

Here's my epis:

Beloved Epiphones

Hi all, just wanted to chime in and say that I have a Epi 1275 Double Neck
which is all that I wanted it to be. Just recently- Jan.2,2009- I got a Epi
Les Paul Standard Honey Burst. I have to say that I literally fell in love with this guitar at first sight. It is absolutely flawless, not a mark on it. It must have been set up right by somebody because it plays even better than it looks. It has tone to spare and sustain for days. It was made in '06 but the guy I got it from bought it at guitar center. It plays as good as my Gibson
Les Paul Studio. It looks and sounds soooo good, like having a really hot girlfriend that you just can't wait to take to the beach! Sorry if I'm getting all mushy but this guitar instantly became part of my life. By the way I've had that Les Paul Studio for way longer than any girlfriend!

I agree, so many guitars so little money. I wish that GAS was covered by my insurance!
