I think EMGs will have a more metal sound. Zakk Wylde is known for the 81/85 combo is many of his signature guitars. As far as an EMG 89 goes, I've never heard of it. EMGs will be more difficult and costly to install into your Epi Les Paul since they are active pickups. The Gibson 490R and 498Y (you mean 498T?) will drop right in with just a little bit of soldering. I believe they are the same pickups used in most Les Paul Studios and Customs. They sound really good and I would prefer them over the EMGs. If you are thinking about aesthetics then the EMGs will certainly look more "gothic" than Gibson pickups. Overall, this all depends on your tone preference. You should check out the Gibson and EMG websites and read the specs on their pickups.

Make sure you don't pay Gibson prices for those pickups. Search around for the deals. Many people rip the pickups out of their Gibson LPs and put other stuff in there. You might be able to get a deal on some used pups.

Upgrade your hardware and electronics.
- Get CTS pots and better caps (.022 microfarads (uF)
- Get locking tuners like Sperzels or Grover Roto-Grips; they bite down on the string which will help energy transfer giving you more sustain/resonance.
- Tone Pros bride/tailpiece will also improve energy transfer, the hardware is actually attached to the studs instead of resting on them like stock Gibson bridge and tailpiece.

I had a Epi LP100 that I installed a DiMarzio PAF at neck and a DiMarzio Super Distortion at the bridge[less than $140.00 for the pair, they sounded better than my SG Specials stock Gibson pups. This combo is good for hard rock or metal. Also very easy to in install, look up pup swap on musicians friend web site[tech page, look for epi lp pick-up swap,do it yourself save some $ for other mods and improvements. Wish I never sold it.
