iron gear humbuckers

does any one know if the iron gear blues machine humbuckers would be a upgrade against the epi probuckers in a epi 339 or are they on a parr with no discernable difference

Sorry, but I have never experienced Iron Gear pickups so I can't help you with that one!

Never heard of them either, but looked at their web site and they seemed a bit cheap, so would be surprised if they were 'better' than the stock pickups.

I am always wary of the word 'upgrade'. People who swap things often convince themselves that they have made the guitar 'better' because they have spent money and time.

Nothing wrong in experimenting, however, you may not always make an improvement on what the manufacturer has done.

Like everyone else, I too have never heard of them. Then again they probably don't have a following yet in the US and Canada. They appear well constructed but looks have nothing to do with sound.

Like John said, sometimes you'll perceive a difference because of the time and money spent. I used to tinker with my pups but lately I've kept my guitars pretty much stock. If I don't like the sound, I won't buy the guitar. I had an Epi Dot and all I kept reading was that the pups sound like mud. Not to me. Mine sounded great.

So, that being said, I'm not sure that we've helped at all. You may have to bite the bullet and just try them.

Have you tried any Bare Knuckle pickups? I have tried some of those and liked them.

Great guitars. I have just sold my 339 and trying to sell my 336. Purely because I am trying to reduce my collection and make room in case we move to a smaller house in the next year.

Not to hijack the OPs thread but my wife's been talking about moving into something smaller too. I've already begun the purge. Sold the drum kit earlier this year and going to try to get rid of some guitars and amps. However, if my my son buys a house in the near future, then he can have some of them.
