Hello from Minnesota
I know some of you from Strat-Talk and appreciate what you have to offer over there so I thought I'd sign up for Gibson-Talk. I did it ass-backwards last time--I bought a Strat and then discovered the forum. I wish I knew all I've learned since then before I bought a guitar and not after. This time I've decided to do this in the correct order: learn about Gibsons from smart people with first-hand experience and then buy a guitar. Right now I'm leaning toward a Gibson Les Paul Studio, but might be open to a variety of other options, including Epiphone.

hi there. welcome to gibson-talk, LB. glad to have you over here, too. like any guitar, it's what you feel comfortable with. Gibsons or Epiphones are good guitars. you might even check out a used one or two. shop/look in all the shops around. I go to Groth Music in Bloomington alot or there is My Music Store in Golden Valley. the Best Buy in Richfield has some Gibsons and Epiphones, also. shop around. have some fun. again, welcome.

gibbys are a sickness. people buy other guitars and change them. gibson lovers buy old gibsons and put them back stock. put that one in your pipe and smoke it. epi's are a nice fix and it doesnt hurt your feeling to do somthing nice for them like putting in gibby gear. i like fender's too, there i admit it, keep several diff types of axes....laters....chuck

Thanks. I think guitars in general are infectious. Is My Music Store the one in the strip mall at the intersection of Winnetka and 55? If so, I've been meaning to check that one out. I'll also check out Groth and the Best Buy in Ritchfield. I live in Maple Grove and usually shop at American Guitar and Band, but I do stop by the Best Buy in Maple Grove now and then. I hate to shop at chains, but at least it's a local chain, and the folks working in the music department are really decent in Maple Grove. They had an SG Diablo on sale for $1,399. I came within a pube's thickness of buying it, but when I finally decided to pull the plug it was gone. What a beautiful guitar.

it's a small world. I work in Osseo. ha ha yep, that's My Music Store. it's right next to "Down In The Valley Music". there are some pretty knowledgeable people working in there. Groth has a nice selection of guitars, too.

Welcome to the forum, LB. You can learn a lot about Gibson & Epis here-I have a Gibson 'the Paul' Standard, it's a 1978 model and solid walnut. It plays nicely but I like the sound of my Epiphone Les Paul Standard with the Plus top better, it has the mahogney with a maple cap and has a more Les Paul sound than the walnut guitar-the Epi has that 'Jimmy Page/Led Zepplin' sound!
Check out my albums Electric guitars-2008 to see my Gibsons and Epi guitars as well as a picture of a Gibson SG-200-my first Gibson, and long gone I'm sorry to say~

Anyone who's in the Minneapolis metro area should check out a show at the Turf Club in St. Paul (1601 University Ave W) on Friday, July 10 (a week from tomorrow). My friend's band 10w40 is opening, followed by the Tisdales and Story of the Sea. I don't know about the other two bands, but 10w40 kicks ass. I'll be the bald guy, most likely sitting at a table with 10w40, along with a hippy-looking dude, an old friend from college, his girlfriend, another aging hipster friend, and maybe a kind of goofy looking younger kid, provided he can stay sober enough Friday night to go out to a show. We might have a few other people with us, too, but so far those are the people who've confirmed. It might be a fun time to meet some fellow guitar afficianados.
