another newbie here

I FOOLISHLY sold my early 70s SG a long time ago......have been thinking of getting another one lately.

saw a nice used white Epiphone SG at the guitar shop I frequent today. It seemed pretty nice, it's about 1/3 the price of a used Gibson SG they have as well ......got there too close to closing to really check it out. I'll have to get back there.

I have a hard time evaluating gear in a store....

I'll search the forum to see what I can find out about the Epiphone SGs, on another forum people are "Encouraged to use the search function"...but, anybody who wants to chime in on comparing the two...I'd be interested in hearing your opinions.

Don't hold my two Telecasters against me...

Hello everybody.

Hello:

I don't know anything about SGs, other than the nasty rumor I heard that they are neck heavy. But I bet there is someone here who can help. no worries about the teles, many of us swing both ways.

welcome here.

SGs ARE neck heavy, Les Pauls are just heavy....

well, if you like the way a guitar plays and sounds, it's a good one. that's why it's always good to play a guitar before you buy it. as you said, there's some "gems" out there and there are some "duds" out there. so, when you come across a guitar that "passes" all of your qualifications, get it.

oh yeah, welcome to gibson-talk. we're glad to have you here.

I was hoping somebody would chime in with something like "The Epiphone is a GREAT SG, a screamin' deal" or "There's no comparison, get the Gibson"...

I'll have to check the Epi and Gibson SG this weekend, I'll bring my amp in with me too...

stay tuned ........

and the purchase today was.....

the used white Epiphone SG.

I got out of work early. I tried the Gibson SG and the Epiphone...I liked the feel and sound from the Epiphone better. I'll have to get a picture uploaded.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier, but I can congratulate you on a great purchase. I have the same Epi G-400 that is black, and it's one of my favorites-it goes with me to all my gigs. And I've found that using a leather strap will help the neck heavy issue a lot! The nylon straps just slide too easily.

I also had a 70's Gibson SG that had neck and tuning issues that made it undependable, and this totally turned me off about SG's for about 30 years. Then last spring I was testing out a tube amp and took a Stratocaster along to check it out-it sounded very good-then thought 'I need to see how it sounds with a Gibson style guitar'.
Hanging overhead was an Epi faded cherry G-400 SG, I pulled it down and plugged it in-and I was won over and decided to start checking these guitars out. The tube amp came home with me so I started looking at used G-400's. I knew one thing I did not want was a Vibrola trem bar on it-I hated the one on the Gibson, I knew it was a big part of the tuning issues. Anyway, I went into a music store in town and there was the black G-400-it had some dings and was a little rough-but plugged in is sounded beautiful.
And don't apologize about the Teles-I have several Teles as well as Strats and play them all. The Epi SG and a Tele copy with humbuckers are my pair of gigging guitars.
So welcome aboard, I bet that G-400 will be an amazing guitar.
