New guy from Portugal

Daniel from Portugal. I have been a "Fender-guy" all my life, but I'm willing to get an SG as my next purchase...

Love music and everything guitar-related so I guess I will have fun here.

Hi Daniel! Welcome to Gibson-Talk, make yourself at home. I primarily play both the F and G brands and a few others now and then. It's all good!
Some contend that rock 'n roll is bad for the body & bad for the soul.
Bad for the heart, bad for the mind, bad for the deaf & bad for the blind.
It makes some men crazy and they talk like fools.
Makes some men crazy and they start to drool.

Hey there Daniel!

The SG is a pretty popular Gibson because of it's price point. They can be bought for about half the price of a Les Paul or 335.

But that doesn;t mean they are half as good. Quite the contrary. They can sing or scream, whichever you need. With P90s they have nearly the same note definition Fender Guys are used to, but way more meat to the tone. You rarely if ever hear of someone complaining that their P90 SG sounds thin or weak.

For even more meat, go for the full on Humbuckers. In an SG, the same pickup sounds a little brighter and a little livelier than say an LP.

And don't be afraid of used. Plenty of really nice SGs come up for sale. I picked up a gently used '85 SG Standard, Humbuckers, bound neck, nibs on the neck binding for a heck of a deal. Some dislike the Norlin era guitars, but a Norlin SG can be had at a very nice price with really no issues with quality or tone.

For me, the SG has only one problem... Due to the light weight, it has poor balance. If you play with a strap standing up and let go of the neck, the neck WILL drop and the headstock will hit the ground. Many SGs die this death. Watch out for cracked headstock neck joints if you buy used.

Very early SGs had issues where the neck joins the body, but that was mostly taken care of by the late 60's.

Wait for a good deal and get one! Join the Gibson ranks!

Welcome to Gibson Talk Daniel! Great to have you with us. I was also a Fender guy for 20 years before I bought my first Gibson.
Take Care
