I actually have several. It really depends what I'm doing at the time. I play in a jazz big band, and the guitar and amp or amp settings I use for that will be totally different than for a blues jam or a cover band setting.

It's not that I have anything against finding your own sound, I just think one should be flexible enough to answer yes! when opportunity calls.

I'm one of those that subscribes to the theroy that your tone is mostly in your hands, your ears, and your approach to the instrument. We've probobly all seen players walk into a music store or sit in with someone and reproduce (or nearly reproduce) their tone on the equipment that is there. That said, you have to have some gear to pull it off and certain gear can make it easier.

I mainly use an LP, an ES-335, and a tele with a Mesa Nomad head and a NAU 2/12 cab for gigs in our classic rock band. The Mesa gives me a huge palette of sounds to work with which is perfect for covering a wide range of material. For jazz gigs or lighter fare I often use the ES-335 or my Ibanez GB20 with an old Princeton Reverb or a Traynor.

Yeah basically personal sound is not the matter what you use - it's the matter how you play. David Gilmour will always sound like him regardless what's on the other side of a guitar cord.
It's phrasing, bending, vibrato, melodies and all that. Right now I have 5 guitars: Gibson LP Custom over 30 years old \that's why I'm here \ Fender Strat Japan and 3 other custom luthier's instruments including 7string and Variaxis- luthier's guitar with Variax Line6 electronics. As for amplification, now I use Line6 Vetta modeling amp which I find, after many years of playing whole bunch of tube amps, veeery tuby and I have most of the sounds of best amps there. I also use some custom overdrive stomps on front of vetta.

I'm not sure what is better: Dean ML with Bill Lawrence L-500 pair of pickups or X-plorer with his powerfully ceramics? Both guitar have advance and short comes. I' like X-plorer lead PU through my Marshall VS8040, sometime with help of Boss DS-1.
Also, good combination is with Peavey 5150. If you didn't try it, then you don't know what you missed

I do not a specific tone as am lucky enough to have several options/combinations. But here are some I have worked hard to uncover:

Les Paul + 57 Tweed Deluxe (5e3) jumpered, Tone 8 vol +3 = The only way to hear vintage LP tones.

PRS Soapbar + 57 Tweed Deluxe Bright input, Tone 6 Vol 4= Soul to Blues to Indie to Zeppelin

PRS Soapbar + Cornford Roadhouse + PROEL DS10 pedal=Clean to dirt in HiFi articulation

73 Fender Hardtail Strat + Fender Supersonic Vibrolux setting=Classic 60's All American

Gibson ES 335 + Pignose G40V (6L6 12ax7 tube 40W amp) clean =Bassman-esque tones BETTER than when had my 59 LTD

The only pedal I rely on is the PROEL DS10 which is an Italian made pedal that is actually a clean boost. The other predals I apply if needed are the Danelectro Cool Cats - The Drive (with humbuckers) or Trans Drive (ala Timmy). Magnificent value for money/quality of tone. Their Vibe pedal also is orgasmic with the Supersonic Vibrolux and a Strat... Oh yes then there is the....!

I like to use multiple amps to get a unique sound. One amp I use has great bass and mids and the other amp has great mids and highs. So I chain them together to be more like a half stack with 2 tone stacks and 2 different kinds of speakers.

I sound how I sound, no matter what gear I play. Currently, Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster for guitars and a Mesa Boogie Mark V amp.

By the way, Boogies are not just for Metal fans!
