I just watched the movie a second time the other night. I mentioned before that when Edge overuses effects to his own impressiveness/delight, I remind myself how much I liked his early playing. Then there is a scene where he pulls out a box of old cassette tapes, and says that he has no idea what they are. It turns out they are old '86/'87 guitar licks, pre-Joshua Tree. He smiles a lot. So do I, because the viewer can now "hear" his real guitar playing.
Jack White mentions the act he got his whole act from; The Flat Duo Jets is an early 80s band two-man band. I remember them from college, although at the time I was more into REM and U2!

Addendum: If you still haven't seen it, get it and enjoy! Also, it's Davis Guggenheim, not David. My mistake.

I have it on DVD. I find myself putting it in and using the scene select to try to learn all the different licks. spent some time this weekend working on scene with Jimmy Page playing Ramble On.

I have probably watched it 6 or 7 times now. still recommend it.

I think it's funny that the Edge complains about how self-indulgent bands were in the late 70s when U2 got started, with their 15 minute guitar solos. sounds like a Zeppelin concert.

Then Jack White comments that there was nothing really interesting happening with guitar music in the late 80s, just when U2 was at it's height of popularity.

fifteen minute guitar solos..... Those have always bugged me. I love the sound of the guitar, and in the right circumstance a long solo is nice to listen to, however...........is it really necessary to play every lick one knows every time it's your turn to solo? I've always been taught, and i agree, that the job of the guitarist - as well as anyone else in the band - is to work together to make the singer, as well as the band as a whole, sound good. That's who the people come to see/hear. All things in moderation. Too many in our ranks over play to the point of boring the audience. Tastefull well place licks will be enjoyed and remembered. We dont have to beat the audience over the head with the guitar.........they know we're there, make it for the right reasons.

I saw it on On Demand the other night, I enjoyed it. Especially the clips of Edge as a young player.

Nothing at all wrong with long solos assuming they are done well. Just think jazz. We used to play songs lasting 30 mins back in the 60s, as a 3 piece. All instruments including the voice would 'solo'.

I find the sort of stuff that the chap from U2 plays is utterly boring. Guitar is masked by the thousands of effects he is playing .

Still many people like it

We all have our likes and dislikes...we're all supposed to like jazz correct? Take a woman on a date to hear jazz music and the night should turn out well, maybe! The thought of listening to endless jazz improvs makes my stomach turn...I loathe jazz...
Think I'll watch It Might Get Loud again, still annoyed that the Edge doesn't play the guitar anymore! Luckily old U2 still pleases me...

Long solos, tastefully done....what comes to mind is Dicky Betts in the '70's. Mark Knopfler and early Dire Straits. But even then........I think of it this way - How many strictly instrumental acts have survived for any length of time compared to groups or singles that perform vocals. Much as I love the music of many groups and single artists, I wouldn't want to spend four or five hours in a bar (or any place else) listening to one singer. My point is that it gets boring very quickly. Another thing that I find hard to do is play with a group that insists on doing everything "just like it was recorded" note for note, beat for beat. It is much like being a robot. Sure it can be done, but why. Go to a concert and listen closely to a big name act. More often than not, they don't do the songs "just like it was recorded". Chances are, you're not even hearing the same musicians from the recording. If you want the guitar solos "just like it was recorded", just go down to GC on Saturday morning or after school lets out during the week, if you want to hear shredding that is. Ahh, but I ramble...........I do that in my old age.....personal preference, I know. I don't mean to offend anyone. Age has a lot to do with it. When I was a kid, and rock and roll was new, my parents were always yelling for me to "turn that garbage down." ..........................It ain't changed much, has it? Well, maybe since the kids are going deaf from headphones.
