Vintage c.1963 eb3 ebony Bass

Hi. Hope someone can shed some light on this. I bought a second hand EB3 bass in ebony way back in c.1968 from a guy in Manchester, UK.

The serial number, stamped at back of headstock is 48PP and the number on the pots indicates 1963.

I was c. 18 years old when I bought this and it was in good condition. I played it for few years in a band, got married and it has had little use since then.*

The bass was restored and refinished recently, hence the slightly faded stamped serial. But is as original apart from a replacement neck pup cover (long gone) which was nickel and scratched and was replaced with a more recent chrome plated one in the late '60's

I have no doubts as to the authenticity of the bass but for the life of me cannot find any info on this particular serial number.

Any info on this would be great, it's a beautiful guitar and I'm not intending selling it but I would love to know more about.

Hi and welcome to this place.

Have you tried contacting Gibson? They usually help if they can, although their records may not be complete for the 60s.

Email I have used is Service.Europe@gibson.com

They will need to see pics of the guitar including the serial no.

Hi. Yes I have, I sent them an email with more or less the contents of my post and the pics but nothing back yet. Was over a week and half ago. Might resend it again.
Thanks.

My last email to them was a couple of years ago and that was still current.

I had one answer from a chap called Boris on boris.franz@gibson.com

Got a reply from Boris,
We unfortunately cannot tell you much about the serial stamp. We have not seen any similar serial stamps and our archive holds no information on 48PP or similar stamps with this configuration.

So basically I've drawn a blank on this but it would be good to know if any basses like this still exist.

I did say their 60s records may not be complete.

You could try and contact this chap. He's a collector and does have a lot of info.

http://www.guitarhq.com/

His pages on the EB3 are at.

http://www.guitarhq.com/gibson9.html#eb3

He does have contact info, however, he also says he only answers emails if people are trying to sell him something. You never know, he may answer a simple question on serial nos

That is a great looking bass, though, and I would bet that it is quite a thumper!
