Larger resistance potentiometers pass more highs. This might lead one to perceive an 'openness'. IT is not a volume thing, though. I, too, prefer 500K pots on humbuckers; but I like either linear taper for volume control or a treble bypass circuit on an audio taper pot.

Not me on the treble bypass especially when you wire it in the vintage 50's wiring.

IF you take the tone lead off of the volume pot 'out'...'50's circuit, then the taper of the volume pot is changed and becomes more useful for rolling off the volume.

sometimes i've noticed the jack is wired backwards, and that produces a problem with a humming sound. check to see if the ground is wired to the right place.
