I'm trying to pin down a date on a 1950's J-45. It has a tapered headstock, cloth side supports, changed kluson to date tuners. I knew of the deceased original owner, so aside from the tuners, believe it to be original. It has a bunch of glue gunk on the neck block so I can't read a FON. Two questions: What year did they start the drop in bridge saddles and should I carefully sand on the neck block and see if I can discover a FON? I'm thinking 1950 or possibly 1949. It has a drop in saddle. Thanks. Look forward to the forum as I also acquired a 1950 Lg-1 (4627 4) and a 1950 Es-175 (A-5071).

Hi and welcome to this place. Why not contact those that made it? Sometimes their records may not go back but it's worth doing. They will need to see pics.

Alternatively this site has a lot of info:

    Good luck

My memory is that cloth side supports was a 1950 thing; the one I owned for a while had them and that was one of the features used to date it.
