Newbie here, I recently purchased a 2017 les paul traditional with stock burstbucker pickups. I would like to swap the pickups out for some slightly hotter ones. I also own a USA made sg special I bought new back in 2000. Does anyone know if there is a way to research the stock pickups in that guitar without taking them out of the guitar? I may swap them with the burst buckers if they are nicer ones. Thanks for any insight in advance.

I'm pretty sure a 2000 SG Special would have the regular 490R and 490T pickups. Those were decent guitars, I've owned a bunch of Specials....and currently own two.

Welcome to Gibson-Talk! Yeah, most likely you have the 490R and 490T, but your best bet is to send some good closeup pictures of your guitar, with the serial number to Gibson. They can give you the specs on yours without a problem.

And welcome to the Pickup Chasing Syndrome, I have suffered through it for years and have a good sized box full of pickups in my garage that I swap around from guitar to guitar. The interesting thing is how a pickup can sound different in another guitar. Have fun!

  4. 490R & 498T is what I'm seeing...
I'd just swap 'em over. If you like 'em, it doesn't matter what they are, and chances are there'll be some info on the bottom when you get 'em our.

For what it's worth, my best SG proudly features 490R & 498T. They are excellent and can easily produce a wide range of great tones. And this is after about 6 pickup swaps in that guitar. I was just playing it last night and enjoying it.

Sounds like the 490’s will be going into the paul. I used to own a les paul standard back in the late 90’s that came with them stock. That guitar sounded way better than this new paul with burstbuckers in it. I must say I’m not impressed with burtbucker pickups. (Mine are not burstbucker pros) thanks for all the insight.

I think I already mentioned it, but pickups sound different in different guitars. It's a fact of life. I have moved the same set through 4 guitars, and got a new palette from each one. You might find (or have) a guitar that those Burstbuckers will sound amazing in.
